Wing 2019

Twined rush. 1m x 1.5m 

Inspired by the elements, sun and rain. This work is derived from Japanese rain capes made from rice straw, the protection they gave farmers in the fields and from sunburst imagery. Natural materials hold solutions to age old problems and as humans we have creatively harnessed these innate properties to serve our practical needs.  

This was made as one of a group of final pieces for a two-year course in Basketry Skills, for which I was given the Christiane Sands Award for excellence.
